The original palace was given to Edward II in 1305 by the Bishop of Durham, Anthony Bek, and used as a royal residence from the 14th to the 16th century.
Eltham Palace was run by many different owner until in 1995 English Heritage assumed management of the palace and was responsible for restorations that were made in 1999.

For hundreds of years it was a key residence for the British monarchy, even housing a young Henry VIII; by the 1630s, the palace had passed into new ownership and continued to change hands until Civil War when it was used as a barn!

This evocative London palace has a fascinating history – not only is it famous for housing Royalty but (having been bought by Stephen Courtauld in the 1930s) it was partially converted into an excellent example of an Art Deco house. Few London palaces can boast such a varied past.
