Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 and is also known as "The Lady with the Lamp", because of her night time walks tending to sick and wounded soldiers. On her return from this bloody conflict she established the Nightingale Training School for nurses at St Thomas’ Hospital. She was also a pioneering nurse, writer and noted statistician.
Florence Nighthingale was raised in a honorable, upper-class family and her announcement to enter nursing in 1984 caused her a lot of troubles among her family. Mainly her mother did not agree with Florence Nightingale’s decision because she wanted her daughter to become a mother and wife- the expected role for a woman of her status. As the strong woman that she was, Florence Nightingale taught herself in the art and science of nursing and in 1844 she became the leading advocate for improved medical care in hospitals.
Florence Nightingale’s most famous contribution came during the Crimean War 1845. She focused on medical camps for wounded military and was sent to Turkey to take care of the medical provision and logistics. At the age of ninety years Florence Nightingale died peaceful during sleep and since then her work served as an inspiration for nurses all over the world.
