Fishermen were the first to settle in Barcelona in the 18th century: In the seafront land, now known as Barceloneta. Even today you can see the narrow streets where the ancient culture is still alive, with old men sitting on the street in front the door of their house and women shouting at one another across balconies. However, the new Barceloneta has a rather cosmopolitan lifestyle. The main attraction of this area obviously is the beach where you will be able to enjoy a lot of chiringitos and bars to listen to live music. Thanks to the people who patrol up and down selling whatever a Barcelona visitor needs, you can also take a delicious drink while sitting in the sand.

La Barceloneta is a famous tourist place with a lot of restaurants facing towards the sea. Here you will find some of the best seafood, and a wonderful view at the sea. It is recommended to walk around the built up part and behind the strip of cafes and icecream shops of this part of Barcelona. Here you can find a lot of typical products and attractions like an IMAX, the Barcelona Aquarium or the Teleferico de Montjuic.

Barcelona is suitable for enjoying the beach and the city centre at the same time. The nightlife and the club scene are very popular among young people and Barcelona tourists in general.

Since the Olympic Games in 1992, this area of Barcelona has experimented a lot of changes. Years ago the seafront was made up by warehouses and docks. Now this area has been transformed to one of the most modern districts of Barcelona. The district has two beaches which are equipped with everything you need- for instance: showers, bathrooms, first aids and even changing rooms for disabled. The beaches are perfect for windsurfers. Amateurs will be able to learn surfing in on of the many sailing schools offering their services close to Barcelona's beach.

At night this area gets very lively, as many people meet in the famous Barcelona bars and restaurants. Two of the most popular are the Shoko Club Barcelona and the Baja Beach Barcelona from where you have a good view out onto the port. Everything is under the watchful eye of the big golden fish designed by Frank Gehry for the '92 Barcelona Olympic Games. Bogatell is less modernised than the Villa Olympica, but it still has remnants of Barcelona: small Catalan cafes, narrow roads, quiet squares where you can cool down after a long day at the Barcelona beach. Avenida Icaria which runs through Bogatel, is where you will find the Barcelona Villa complex consisting of restaurants, shopping posibilities, a supermarket, and a big cinema.

In this district of Barcelona you will find a wide variety of hotels as well as the Barcelona beach and the Olympic village for your personal entertainment. Other sights of interest are the Barcelona Parc Ciutadella which is rather peaceful most of the time and a lovely place for a picnic.
