London's Cambridge theatre is the proud host of Chicago, the 1975 musical adaptation of the 1926 play based on true events.
Set in the mid-1920s, Chicago is the gritty vaudeville story of two young beautiful women, Velma and Roxie, accused of murder and vying for the media's attention in the hope of establishing their individual innocence. It's through Velma that Roxie meets the slick lawyer, Billy Flynn, who gets caught between both girls, fighting to release them of their accusations. But Velma gets jealous of Roxie's new celebrity and things get heated in the cell block.
First penned as a play in 1926 by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a Chicago journalist who based the play on the real-life trials of two female killers she had reported on. The play proved so popular that it was turned into a film directed by Cecil B. DeMille a year later. It was then turned into a musical in the mid-70s and has been a hit since!
