A young and destitute Jean Valjean is commited to a chain-gang for stealing a loaf of bread. Having served his sentence after 19 years, Valjean is more jaded than before he was arrested as a young man. But after a kindly bishop forgives Valjean for stealing from him and goes out of his way to save Valjean from returning to prison, he is inspired to change his ways and begin his life anew. Years later, Valjean has grown to become a prominent and benevolent figure as mayor of his adopted town. But has he truly redeemed himself? As fate would have it, a Parisian inspector happens upon the town during his travels and recognizes Valjean from his days in prison. But the man he sees is not the goodly father of the town, only a criminal hardened by the quarries. And he is determined to make Valjean suffer once again.
Based on the epic novel by Victor Hugo that would go on to change the French judicial system and demolish debtor's prison forever, Les Miserables is a story of sufferage, redemption, and the meaning of justice.
