Football

Portugal has a big tradition of football, it is one of the biggest passions of the Portuguese people. Portugal hosted the European Football Championship in 2004 and following on from this has applied together with Spain to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cups.

Summer Festivals in Portugal Summer Festivals on the Alentejo Coast of Portugal a fantastic summer music festival. It takes usually place during the first weekend of August and attracts a large number of people. Paredes de Coura is another summer music festival in the north of Portugal. This festival takes usually place in the last weekend of August in an amazing location close to the river Tabuão. The festival incorporates a mix of both national and international artists.

Sensation White Festival usually takes place in early May and is an innovative and interactive event of dance. The festival takes place in Lisbon at Pavilhão Atlântico.

Festival Musicas do Mundo takes place on the fishing coast of Portugal, in the district of Sines. This festival usually happens in July and is a great event at which to discover new talents and new music from across the globe. The location for this festival is stunning with concerts played both in a local Castle and along the beach.

Fado - Portuguese Music

Fado is the traditional music of Portugal. Wander through the Bairro Alto or Alfama area of Lisbon and you will undoubtedly encounter this wonderful music.

Mariza is the most popular Fado singer at present. She is internationally recognised for both her brilliant interpretation of this traditional song and her work in reviving Fado as a popular music choice. Her album Terra of Mariza is considered among some British Magazines to be one of the best in world music.

Portugal has a prominent role as regards European and international politics. Since the Portuguese Prime Minister Mário Soares led Portugal to enter the European Community in 1986 Portugal is now in the front line of Europe. Jose Manuel Barroso a renowned Portuguese statesman is the current President of the European Commission.
