For visitors, London is full of mysterious adventures, with the Caves in Chislehurst being one of the most intriguing. Chislehurst Caves is a 22 miles series of tunnels in Chislehurst. Although the Chislehurst Caves are so called caves they are originally mines for chalk and flint.
Chislehurst Caves are firstly mentioned in 1250's, are a tourist attraction since the early 1990's and have been through a lot of modifications, for instance they were used for mushroom cultivation in the 1930's, during World War I they were used to store ammunation. During World War 2 they served as concealment for nearly 15.000 people. Equipped with even electric lightning, a chapel and a hospital, they became a real Underground City. In the 1960's celebreties like The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, or David Bowie gave concerts there and lately the Chislehurst Caves were used to shoot a music video.
The mine consists of a labyrinth of arched chalk passages where one could easily get lost. The passages are from 7 ft. to 12 ft. high and 6 ft. to 10 ft. wide. Irregular trapezoids of chalk support the roof. If you are in search for an adventure to experience, you should definetly take the chance of holding the London Pass and visiting the Chislehurst Caves!
