Housed in a magnificent 19th century waterworks, Kew Bridge Steam Museum is located right next to Kew Bridge – visitors to this engaging London museum should note that trains run regularly to the station from central London Victoria and Waterloo (via Clapham Junction) while Kew Gardens tube station is only a short walk.

The Kew Bridge Steam Museum is an incredible place to learn about the technology that powered the industrial revolution and kick-started Britain’s industrial and economic dominance in the 19th century. All the steam engines are powered by real steam and can be seen in action every weekend (note the Cornish engines only run on selected weekends).

One of the highlights of Kew Bridge Museum is the 1846 “Grand Junction” 90-inch engine. Described by Charles Dickens as “a monster” it is the world’s largest working beam engine. The outstanding collection of water pumping engines also includes working diesel and water-powered machines while the “Water For Life” Gallery explores the history of London’s water over 2000 years.
