Major tourist attraction in Rome

Rome, also called “The Eternal City”, is has the richest history in the whole world. In fact the Roman Emperors have left their marks all over Europe. So you can imagine the number of historical buildings, constructions and monuments left in one of the most beautiful cities in the world today.

But the fascinating city of Rome is not only connected to the Roman Emperor, in fact the capital of Italy also has some of the most distinguished works of art during the Renaissance period. Most of them can be found in the Vatican. The most famous work of art is called "the Cappella Sistina", created by the most important Renaissance artist, Michelangelo Bonarroti.

Trevi fountain

The Trevi fountain is one of the most famous fountains in the world, it was built in 1700. It is based on a classical style but mixed with parts of the baroque style. It is located next to Poli Palace in Piazza di Trevi. The fountain is dominated by an amazing sculpture set, a shell shape coach driven by seahorses and triton.

The tradition says that you have to throw a coin in the fountain. You can throw from 1 up to 3 coins with you right hand over your left shoulder. One coin - this will ensure you another visit to Rome. Two coins - this will lead to a new romance. Three coins - this will ensure either a marriage or divorce. The Trevi fountain has commissioned in the Papal Rome age by Pope Clemente XII Corsini. The works started on the 1732, were interrupted several times until its completion in 1762, by Giuseppe Panini.

Basilica di San Pietro

The Basilica di San Pietro is a major monument in Rome and is considered to be one of the greatest sites in the Christian world. It has a magnificent structure that dominates the monumental Piazza San Pietro.

The Basilica construction began on the 1506 during the reign of Pope Giulio II and it has finished in 1626 in under command of Pope Urbano VII. The work began by Donato Bramante and was continued un the 1546 by the most famous artist of renaissance, such as Michelangelo Buonarroti. It was eventually finished by Giacomo Dalla Porta.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon is an antique monument of Rome, built in the very beginning as a temple for all the gods. Starting from the VII century the Pantheon was changed into a catholic church. It was built by Marco Vipsiano Agrippa, a roman politician and general, who lived in 27 – 25 BC. Afther the Pantheon was completely refurbished between 115-127.

The most interesting part of the building is the dome, with a diameter and a height of 43,44 m. The way it was build makes it one of the most reknown buildings in the world.

Castel Sant'Angelo

The construction of the Castel Sant'Angelo was ordered by the Adriano Emperor in 1525. Adriano wanted to use this building as his own mausoleum. Over the years the Castel Sant'Angelo has been used as a fortress and as a prison.

A major incident, the "Sack of Rome", pope Papa Clemetne VII took refuge in the Castel changing its purpose for one more time. Using the “Passetto”, which is a construction that connects the Vatican with Castel Sant'Angelo, the pope changed it into a real residence for the pope's to follow.

Forum Romano

Over the years the Forum Romano had several uses. It has been used as:

From the V century BC it has been used as the first temple and monument in Rome.

The Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums was created by Pope Giulio II in the XVI century. The monument has one of the biggest art galleries in the world. Every work of art of the Vatican Museum was collected over the centuries by several popes.

The creation of the Vatican Museums began when they discovered a marble statue from 1506. Michelangelo Buonarroti and Giuliano de Sangallo advised Pope Giulio II to expose the statue to the people.

Piazza di Spagna

First use: connect the church “Trinità dei Monti” with the Bourbon Embassy.

Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous Italian squares. It was built to connect the “Trinità dei Monti” church with the Spanish bourbon embassy between 1721 and 1725. This connection was made using a majestic staircase with many roofgardens, each adorned with flowers and decoration. It was designed by Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi. It has a baroque style.

Circus Maximum

Location: Between Via del Circo Massimo and Via dei Cerchi

First use: Horse races

The Circus Maximum is an antique Roman Circus that hosted horse races in the very beginning. It is located in the valley between Palatino and Aventino. The first structure of the Circus was built in the second half of the VI century BC, but the major part of Circus Maxium was build in 103 AD.

The Circus Maximum could host 250.000 person and its dimension was unbelievable for that epoch: the track has a length of 621m and a width of 118m.
